Norway's Rail Merger: Vy and Flytoget Unite

Published: 2024-09-18

In a significant move to enhance rail services in Eastern Norway, the Norwegian government has announced the merger of Flytoget and Vy, with Flytoget becoming a subsidiary of Vy.

This integration aims to optimize the limited railway capacity through Oslo and improve the overall train service by 2028. The decision, however, has sparked controversy.

Critics, including political parties and Flytoget employees, argue that this could diminish the quality of service, fearing a return to a monopolistic structure reminiscent of the old NSB days.

Despite these concerns, the government insists that the merger will lead to a more efficient and passenger-friendly rail system, ensuring better use of resources and maintaining Flytoget's high service standards.
