Norway Faces Whooping Cough Vaccine Shortage

Published: 2024-09-27

Norway is experiencing a significant shortage of whooping cough vaccines, as respiratory infections rise across the country.

The Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) reports a stable yet high incidence of whooping cough since May, with 928 cases reported in September alone.

Despite the health authorities' recommendation for adults to renew their whooping cough vaccine every ten years, the vaccines Boostrix Polio and Repevax are currently out of stock due to production issues.

While the shortage affects adult booster shots, there is no lack of vaccines for children under the national immunization program.

Health officials urge parents to ensure their children are vaccinated and advise adults to check with local pharmacies or doctors for available stock.

Meanwhile, other respiratory infections, including those caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae and rhinovirus, are also on the rise, which is typical for the season.
