Rising Respiratory Infections Amidst Declining COVID-19

Published: 2024-09-21

The latest report from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) indicates a rise in various respiratory infections, although the summer's COVID-19 wave is subsiding.

Despite this decline, 56 COVID-19-related deaths have been recorded in the past three weeks, and a potential increase in cases during the fall cannot be ruled out.

The report highlights a slight increase in mycoplasma infections, particularly among children aged 5 to 14, and a continued prevalence of whooping cough.

Rhinovirus cases, the most common cold virus, have also risen recently.

Health officials emphasize preventive measures such as avoiding crowded indoor spaces, practicing good hand hygiene, and wearing masks to protect vulnerable groups like infants, the chronically ill, and the elderly.

Vaccinations for COVID-19 and influenza are recommended, especially for high-risk groups, with campaigns starting in early October.
