Norway Faces Surge in Respiratory Infections

Published: 2024-10-25

Norway is currently experiencing a surge in respiratory infections, with a notable increase in cases of mycoplasma pneumoniae, according to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI).

The infection wave is particularly affecting southern regions such as Agder, Telemark, Akershus, and Oslo.

Mycoplasma infections often present with cold-like symptoms and a persistent cough, and while most cases resolve on their own, some can develop into pneumonia.

The highest incidence is among children aged 5-14 years.

Alongside mycoplasma, other viruses like rhinovirus, COVID-19, and influenza are also circulating.

Health authorities recommend regular hand washing and the use of masks, especially for those in high-risk groups, to prevent the spread of these infections.

Vaccination is advised for those over 65 and healthcare workers to mitigate the impact of influenza and COVID-19.
