Salmon Mortality Rates Show Mixed Trends

The mortality rate of farmed salmon in Norway decreased slightly in 2024, dropping to 15.4% from 16.7% in 2023, according to the Veterinary Institute.

This marks the first decline in years, with significant improvements in regions like Ryfylke and Hardanger.

However, some areas, such as Nordmøre and Sør-Trøndelag, saw mortality rates rise to 22.4%.

In Northern Norway, mortality rates mostly fell, except for slight increases in Kvaløya to Loppa and Vest-Finnmark.

Despite these improvements, challenges like jellyfish attacks and disease persist, with over 57 million farmed salmon dying in 2024. The government aims to reduce mortality to 5%, but experts warn that achieving this will require sustained efforts in fish health and welfare.
