Drowning Incidents Rise in Norway

Published: 2024-07-25

In Norway, drowning incidents have risen alarmingly, with 41 people reported drowned in the first half of 2023, one more than the same period last year.

July is particularly concerning, as it historically sees the highest number of drownings, with 15 fatalities recorded in July 2022. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has expressed his worries, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility in preventing these tragedies.

The Redningsselskapet reports that around 90 people drown annually, with Innlandet being the region most affected.

Recent incidents, including the tragic drowning of a young girl in Gjerstad, highlight the urgent need for increased awareness and safety measures, such as wearing life jackets and avoiding alcohol while boating.

As the summer season continues, officials stress the importance of vigilance and community support to reduce drowning risks.
