The Norwegian government has proposed a decade-long fishing ban in Oslofjorden, including total restrictions in three zones, to restore fish stocks and the ecosystem.
While 77% of Norwegians support the ban, citing ecological urgency, it faces strong opposition from fishermen and political parties like Arbeiderpartiet and Fremskrittspartiet.
Critics argue pollution, not fishing, is the main issue, and fear the ban will devastate livelihoods.
Researchers, however, stress that immediate action is vital to save the fjord, with collapsing fish populations like cod threatening the ecosystem.
The proposal, which includes stricter fishing regulations, is under public consultation until April 10.
