Rogaland's Lobster Season Begins Amid Concerns

Published: 2024-10-01

The eagerly awaited lobster fishing season in Rogaland kicks off on October 1st, with nearly 5,000 participants registered, a significant drop from last year's numbers.

This decline in registrations comes amid growing concerns about the dwindling lobster population, which has decreased by over 90% along the coast since 1928. Historically, lobsters were abundant, but increased recreational fishing and more efficient traps have contributed to their decline.

While some researchers advocate for a total fishing ban in threatened areas to restore populations, others, like local fisherman Øyvind Jørgensen, argue against such measures, citing existing restrictions and signs of recovery.

As the season begins, enthusiasts of all ages, like 11-year-old Falk Litlekalsøy, are eager to see what their traps will yield, despite the strict regulations in place to protect the species.
