Norway Unites for Coastal Cleanup

Published: 2024-09-17

Norway's annual coastal cleanup week has kicked off, engaging thousands of volunteers across the country in a massive effort to rid beaches and waterways of waste.

This initiative, led by "Hold Norge Rent," encourages citizens to participate in cleaning activities from September 13 to 22. In Nordland, a region with a significant portion of Norway's coastline, residents have been particularly active in these efforts since 2011. Meanwhile, in Mandal, around 70-80 volunteers gathered to clear debris, with support from international "plastic warriors.

" The cleanup is crucial as marine litter, often carried by winds from neighboring countries, continues to pollute Norway's shores.

Despite the enthusiasm, there are concerns about the sustainability of these efforts due to reduced government funding, which threatens the long-term viability of volunteer-driven cleanups.
