Oslo's police chief, Ida Melbo Øystese, has reversed her long-standing opposition to the permanent arming of police officers in the city.
She cites the need for immediate response to critical situations, as officers have armed themselves an average of ten times daily in 2024. Øystese argues that armed patrols are essential for ensuring public safety and rapid response to threats.
Despite her push, Justice Minister Emilie Enger Mehl has not yet approved general arming, though she welcomes the debate.
The discussion comes amid heightened security concerns and increased threat levels in Oslo.
