Vitamin D Overdose Sparks Health Concerns

Published: 2025-02-19

A major error in vitamin D supplementation has raised health alarms in Norway.

Felleskjøpet, a leading agricultural cooperative, mistakenly added excessive vitamin D to chicken feed, leading to eggs containing up to 300 micrograms of the vitamin—20-30 times the recommended daily dose.

This has resulted in the recall of millions of eggs and the culling of thousands of hens.

Experts warn that excessive vitamin D can cause severe health issues, including kidney damage.

Hormone specialist Per Medbøe Thorsby advises individuals to check their vitamin D levels through a simple blood test and avoid supplements if levels are already high.

Felleskjøpet’s CEO, Svenn Ivar Fure, has taken responsibility, declining his 2024 bonus and initiating an external investigation into the incident.

The scandal highlights the risks of over-supplementation and the need for stricter quality controls in food production.
