Halden Nuclear Facility Faces Serious Risks

Published: 2025-02-20

The Halden nuclear facility in Norway is under scrutiny after inspections revealed serious safety concerns.

The Directorate for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (DSA) found multiple violations of regulations and an increased risk of radioactive leaks.

The facility, which stores 1.6 tons of radioactive material, has shown signs of wear, including broken bolts and material corrosion.

Environmental group Bellona has filed a police report, fearing potential harm to people and nature.

While the Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) insists there is no immediate danger, DSA is closely monitoring the situation and has demanded safety improvements.

The facility is set to be decommissioned by a new agency, Norsk nukleær dekommisjonering, starting in March.
