The Norwegian government has announced funding for 3050 new student housing units, marking a record-breaking initiative.
This includes 2417 new constructions and the renovation of 633 existing units.
The funding, primarily directed to major cities like Oslo, Trondheim, Stavanger, Bergen, and Ås, aims to address the acute housing shortage for students and ease pressure on the private rental market.
Research and Higher Education Minister Sigrun Aasland highlighted the importance of this move for student welfare, noting that 5000 units are already under construction.
The initiative follows increased budget allocations negotiated by the Socialist Left Party (SV), which has been praised for its impact on student housing development.
With 69% of funds allocated to urban areas, the government hopes to create a more predictable and affordable housing market for students nationwide.
