Student Housing Crisis in Norway

Published: 2024-08-02

As students prepare for the upcoming academic year, a severe housing crisis looms in Oslo and other major cities in Norway.

Over 15,000 students are currently on waiting lists for student housing, with many facing skyrocketing rental prices in the private market.

The median rent for a bedroom in Oslo has surged to 9,588.50 NOK, leaving students with little left for living expenses after paying rent.

Many students, like Åsmund Kjeldsen, are forced to seek affordable housing options, often settling for subpar conditions or moving further from their campuses.

The Norwegian Student Organization (NSO) emphasizes the urgent need for more student accommodations to alleviate the pressure on the housing market and ensure that students can focus on their studies without financial strain.

Without significant action, the situation threatens to undermine the quality of student life and education in Norway.
