Norwegian Sentiment Shifts Towards Israel Boycott

Published: 2024-09-04

A recent survey reveals that nearly half of Norwegians support a boycott of Israel, reflecting a significant shift in public opinion towards a more pro-Palestinian stance.

This change has been developing since the 1980s, as Norwegians grow increasingly critical of Israeli policies.

Concurrently, the Ethics Council for Norway's sovereign wealth fund, known as the Oil Fund, is considering recommending the exclusion of companies linked to violations of international law, including those contributing to Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories.

This follows a review of the fund's ethical guidelines, prompted by a ruling from the International Court of Justice declaring Israel's occupation illegal.

The Ethics Council's recommendations could lead to divestment from certain companies, pending approval from Norges Bank's board.
