Norway Confronts Anti-Muslim Prejudices

Published: 2024-08-10

In the wake of the tragic events of August 10, 2019, where Johanne Zhangjia Ihle-Hansen was murdered and the Al-Noor mosque in Bærum was attacked, Norway continues to grapple with the persistence of anti-Muslim prejudices.

Despite being a society distinct from the UK, recent studies by the HL Center reveal that a significant portion of the Norwegian population harbors concerning views about Muslims, with 33% perceiving them as a threat to Norwegian culture.

This normalization of anti-Muslim sentiments mirrors trends seen across Europe, where hate crimes against both Muslims and Jews are on the rise, fueled by ongoing global conflicts.

The Stiftelsen 10. august, established in response to these events, works to combat radicalization through education and dialogue, emphasizing the importance of understanding and reconciliation.

As Norway reflects on these issues, the call for societal responsibility in addressing and dismantling these prejudices remains urgent.
