Norway is embarking on its largest defense acquisition in modern history, planning to purchase at least five new frigates.
The decision comes as part of a strategic move to enhance the country's naval capabilities, with the new vessels expected to be phased in from 2029. The Norwegian government has narrowed down potential partners for this significant investment to four key allies: France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States.
Each of these countries is currently engaged in their own frigate projects, making them suitable collaborators.
The cost of a single frigate is estimated to be between 7 and 12 billion kroner, marking this as potentially the most expensive public investment ever made by Norway.
The government aims to finalize its choice of partner by 2025, with considerations including strategic partnerships and the operational capabilities of the frigates offered by each nation.
