Norway's EU Debate Heats Up

Published: 2025-03-08

Support for Norway joining the European Union has risen to 40%, according to a recent Opinion poll.

This marks a significant increase from 30% last year, driven by concerns over global security and economic stability.

However, 49% of Norwegians still oppose EU membership, with younger citizens being the most skeptical.

While some, like Venstre leader Guri Melby, argue that now is the time for Norway to join the EU, others, including Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Senterpartiet leader Trygve Slagsvold Vedum, oppose reopening the debate.

Solberg believes the focus should remain on issues like trade and defense, rather than a divisive EU discussion.

The debate reflects deep divisions in Norwegian politics and society over the country's future relationship with the EU.
