Early Snowfall Hits Norwegian Mountains

Published: 2024-09-26

As autumn holidays approach, travelers in Norway are being urged to prepare for winter conditions in the mountains.

Recent snowfall has blanketed areas such as Filefjell, Hemsedalsfjellet, and Valdresflya, prompting meteorologists to issue a yellow warning for snow in the northern parts of Southern Norway.

The warning predicts 5 to 15 centimeters of snow above 800 to 1000 meters, lasting from Wednesday morning to Thursday.

Motorists are advised to switch to winter tires, as highlighted by the experiences of Arne Kjelsnes, who regretted driving over Filefjell with summer tires amidst 10 to 15 centimeters of snow.

The Meteorological Institute has extended the snow warning to include Friday and Saturday, with expectations of up to 20 centimeters of snow in some areas.

Travelers are encouraged to check weather updates and ensure their vehicles are equipped for the conditions.
