The use of weight-loss medications has surged in Norway, including among children aged 12 to 17. In 2024, over 700 youths in this age group were prescribed these drugs, which are approved for use in children over 12. Experts highlight the effectiveness of newer medications, such as GLP-1 analogs, originally developed for diabetes but now used for weight management.
These drugs reduce hunger and increase feelings of fullness, with clinical studies showing significant results.
However, concerns remain about the high costs, potential weight regain after stopping, and the need for more research on long-term effects.
Despite some initial side effects like nausea, many young users report positive changes, including reduced food cravings and healthier eating habits.
