Surge in Youth Crime Alarms Norway

Published: 2024-08-09

In recent years, Norway has witnessed a troubling surge in youth crime, particularly among 13- and 14-year-olds.

Statistics reveal that the rate of violent crime among this age group has nearly quadrupled since 2014, with 14-year-olds now being the most frequently charged for offenses.

Politicians, including Jon Helgheim from the Progress Party, are calling for stricter measures, including the reintroduction of prison sentences for serious juvenile offenders.

Meanwhile, a new trend of "Vipps robberies"—where young people threaten others to transfer money via the mobile payment app—has emerged, contributing to a growing sense of insecurity in urban areas like Drammen.

Experts emphasize the need for immediate and effective responses to curb this alarming trend, as the current justice system struggles to keep pace with the rising youth crime rates.
