In a controversial decision, the Østfold County Council has voted to close Borg and Greåker high schools in Sarpsborg, affecting nearly 2,000 students.
The decision, made by a majority including the Conservative, Labour, Christian Democrats, Liberal, Centre, and Socialist Left parties, is part of a broader restructuring plan to cut 167 million NOK from the education sector over the next four years.
This move has sparked significant protests from students and teachers, who have been vocal since the proposal was announced in October.
Students from Greåker high school even moved their classroom outside the county house in protest.
Despite the backlash, the closures will proceed once new facilities are ready in Fredrikstad and Sarpsborg, with some programs ending as early as next year.
The county's financial strain necessitated these cuts, as it aims to reduce its budget by 344 million NOK overall.
