Nordic Alert: Russian Sabotage Threats

Published: 2024-08-26

In a significant security alert, Nordic and European intelligence agencies have confirmed acts of sabotage against critical infrastructure, warning the energy sector of potential Russian infiltration.

The Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) convened a meeting with major energy stakeholders and intelligence agencies from Nordic countries, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, amid rising concerns over sophisticated attacks since the Ukraine conflict began.

These attacks, involving both hybrid and physical actions, have targeted critical infrastructure across the Baltic and North Sea regions.

PST Chief Beate Gangås highlighted the recruitment of local criminals through digital channels by Russian intelligence, posing a severe threat to sectors like energy and transportation.

The ongoing Offshore Northern Seas (ONS) conference in Stavanger, a major global energy event, has heightened security measures, with PST actively engaging with industry leaders to prevent espionage and sabotage.

The situation underscores the urgent need for international cooperation and vigilance to safeguard critical infrastructure from foreign threats.
