Witness the First Supermoon of the Year

Published: 2024-08-18

Tonight, sky gazers are in for a treat as the first supermoon of the year graces the night sky.

Pål Brekke from the Norwegian Space Center encourages everyone to stay awake to witness this celestial event.

A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at its closest point to Earth, making it appear eight percent larger and 15 percent brighter than usual.

This supermoon is the first of four expected this fall, visible from Sunday evening through Tuesday.

The best viewing time is Monday evening when the moon reaches its full phase.

Brekke suggests observing the supermoon near the horizon for the most impressive view, due to an optical illusion that makes it appear even larger.

Mark your calendars for the next supermoons on September 18, October 17, and November 15.
