In the town of Modum, Norway, the historic Heggen Church was vandalized with graffiti overnight, escalating tensions in a community already on edge following a recent violent incident.
The church, a medieval structure dating back to the early 1200s, was defaced with messages that local authorities have chosen not to disclose, fearing they might incite further unrest.
This act of vandalism comes in the wake of a canceled torchlight procession in nearby Vikersund, which was called off due to safety concerns after being shared on extremist platforms.
The procession was intended to promote peace following an assault on a local resident, Runar Magnussen, which has sparked controversy and division within the community.
Police have documented the damage and are investigating, while church officials have temporarily covered the graffiti.
The community hopes for dialogue with the perpetrators to prevent future incidents and heal the growing rift.
