Sweden to Lead New NATO Force in Finland

Published: 2024-09-16

Sweden is set to lead a new NATO force in Finland, marking a significant step in strengthening the alliance's northern defenses.

This initiative is part of NATO's "Forward Land Forces" concept, which aims to enhance readiness along its borders with Russia.

Unlike other NATO forces, the Finnish unit will not have a permanent troop presence but will focus on organizing exercises and preparing for rapid deployment if needed.

Sweden's role will primarily involve providing staff officers to coordinate these efforts.

The decision, still pending final approval from NATO members, underscores the close military cooperation between Sweden and Finland.

The new headquarters in Finnish Lapland is expected to be operational by 2026, enhancing NATO's strategic capabilities in the region.
