A dramatic rescue operation unfolded near Mandal on Saturday morning when emergency services responded to reports of a sinking leisure boat.
The alert was raised by a cargo ship that spotted the vessel with only its bow visible above water.
Upon investigation by divers, it was discovered that the boat had three large holes drilled into its bow, leading authorities to suspect fraud and environmental crime.
No individuals were found on board, and the incident, initially treated as a rescue mission, is now under criminal investigation.
Police are working to identify the boat's owner, as such acts not only pollute the environment but also strain emergency resources, according to Operations Leader Øyvind Hægland.
