A recent international study, the International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS), has revealed a concerning decline in digital competence among Norwegian students.
Despite Norway's extensive use of digital tools in education, 40% of ninth-grade students scored at the lowest levels of digital competence in 2023, a significant increase from 24% in 2013. This decline is surprising given the country's heavy investment in digital learning resources over the past decade.
The study highlights that while students are using digital tools more frequently, their ability to effectively utilize these tools has diminished.
Education Minister Kari Nessa Nordtun expressed disappointment in the results, questioning whether the current use of technology in classrooms is truly enhancing learning.
The findings suggest a need to reassess the quality of digital education and possibly introduce a dedicated technology subject to improve digital skills.
