Norwegian Government Faces Energy Crisis

Published: 2025-01-29

The Norwegian government is grappling with a major energy policy dispute that threatens its stability.

The Labour Party (Ap) and the Centre Party (Sp) are at odds over adopting three EU energy directives aimed at renewable energy and efficiency.

While Ap supports the directives, citing benefits for Norwegian industry and EU relations, Sp strongly opposes them, fearing loss of sovereignty and tighter EU energy ties.

Sp leader Marit Arnstad has warned that the disagreement could lead to the party leaving the coalition.

Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre insists the directives are crucial for Norway’s interests but faces mounting pressure from both Sp and parts of his own party.

Talks continue, but the future of the coalition remains uncertain.
