The Norwegian government is planning to significantly reduce the number of quota refugees it accepts in 2025, with sources indicating a potential drop to as low as 200. This marks a continued tightening of immigration policies under the current administration, which previously accepted 3,000 quota refugees in 2022, reduced to 2,000 in 2023, and 1,000 in 2024. The government justifies these cuts by citing the high number of asylum seekers from Ukraine, with 82,500 Ukrainians having received collective protection in Norway so far.
However, this decision has sparked criticism from political figures like Lan Marie Berg of the Green Party, who described the move as "shameful" and questioned why one of the world's wealthiest nations cannot accommodate more refugees during a global crisis.
The full state budget, detailing these and other financial plans, is set to be unveiled soon.
