The Norwegian government has proposed a new tourist tax aimed at managing the increasing influx of visitors to local communities.
This tax, which can be up to 5% on overnight stays, is intended to support public amenities used by both tourists and locals.
The proposal has sparked mixed reactions.
While some local governments welcome the potential financial support, others, like the mayor of Stranda, argue it unfairly targets those already contributing economically, without addressing issues caused by non-paying visitors.
The proposal is open for public consultation until January 2025, with plans to present it to the Storting in spring 2025.
