Lyngdal Bans Personal Decor in Offices

Published: 2024-09-12

Lyngdal municipality in Norway has become the first in the country to implement rules on what employees can display in their offices.

The decision, led by Mayor Unni Nilsen Husøy, aims to ensure that public offices remain neutral spaces, free from personal or political expressions.

This move follows a debate sparked by the presence of a rainbow flag in a municipal office, which some saw as a political statement.

The new guidelines, passed with a majority vote, prohibit decorations that could harm the municipality's reputation.

While some politicians, like Bernt Mushom from the Conservative Party, argue that the rules are unnecessary, Husøy believes other municipalities may soon adopt similar policies.

The guidelines allow for personal items like family photos, but caution against excessive personalization.
