Ismail Haniyeh, the top political leader of Hamas, has been killed in Tehran, Iran, according to statements from both Hamas and Iranian authorities.
Haniyeh was reportedly attacked at his residence following his attendance at the inauguration of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guard confirmed his death, stating that a bodyguard was also killed in the incident.
Hamas described the attack as a "sneaky Zionist raid" and warned of retaliation.
Haniyeh, who had been a prominent figure in Hamas since 2017, was previously a target for Israeli forces, especially after the group's significant attack on Israel on October 7. Israel has not yet commented on the incident, and the circumstances surrounding Haniyeh's death remain unclear.
