Drammen Protests School Closure Plans

Published: 2024-10-09

In Drammen, Norway, a wave of protests has erupted in response to proposed school closures affecting six local schools.

The municipality, facing a financial shortfall, aims to save 170 million kroner, with school closures potentially contributing 55 million kroner to this target.

The schools at risk include Danvik, Rødskog, Vestbygda, Skoger, Tangen, and Steinberg.

Hundreds of residents, including parents and students, have taken to the streets in torch-lit marches, voicing their opposition to the closures.

Critics argue that the decision-making process lacks transparency and fails to consider the broader impact on the community.

The local government has yet to finalize any decisions, with discussions and hearings scheduled to continue into early 2025.
