Court Rules Against Environmental Groups

Published: 2024-10-14

In a significant legal battle, environmental organizations Greenpeace and Natur og Ungdom have faced a setback in their lawsuit against the Norwegian state.

The Borgarting Court of Appeal has ruled against their request for a temporary halt to oil and gas projects at the Breidablikk, Tyrving, and Yggdrasil fields.

The court emphasized that decisions on such matters should primarily be made by the Norwegian Parliament and government, rather than the judiciary.

Despite the ruling, the environmental groups plan to appeal to the Supreme Court, arguing that the oil fields contribute to climate change and pose severe environmental risks.

Previously, the Oslo District Court had ruled in favor of the organizations, imposing a temporary injunction on the projects, which has now been overturned.

The case highlights the ongoing tension between economic interests and environmental concerns in Norway's energy sector.
