After nearly 30 years of legal battles, the cousin of Birgitte Tengs has been awarded 26 million kroner in compensation for being wrongfully convicted of her murder in 1995. The Norwegian Ministry of Justice and the cousin reached a settlement, which could cost the state up to 43 million kroner.
This resolution comes after the cousin was initially convicted and later acquitted, yet still faced a civil judgment requiring him to pay damages.
The case has been a significant burden on the cousin, both emotionally and financially, and the settlement aims to provide some relief.
The murder of Birgitte Tengs remains unsolved, and the case has been one of Norway's most talked-about criminal cases in recent history.
